  • Description

Five days after signing a disengagement agreement, Syrian and Israeli army officers were back in Geneva to sign another agreement setting out a programme for the withdrawal of their forces from the Golan Heights war zone.

The atmosphere was cool as the two sides sat down in Geneva on Wednesday (May 5) to sing the latest accord. The programme for disengagement was set out on a large map of the Golan Heights. It will take effect from Thursday (May 6).

The signing ceremony was held int eh same elegantly decorated council chamber where the first agreement was ratified last Friday. By coincidence, the signing on Wednesday fell on the seventh anniversary of the outbreak of the 1967 Middle East War.

The document sets in motion the phased withdrawal of Syrian and Israeli forces from the Golan heights. It also details a timetable for an exchange of prisoners of war, beginning Friday, and details about repatriation of the dead of last October's war. At the signing, the Commander of the United Nations' Supervisory Force on the Suez front, General Siilsvuo said he had seen a sign of a desirable change in attitude in the Middle East. This film includes pat of his speech before the signing.
