Background: Mudslides caused by heavy rain wreaked considerable damage and claimed at least 18 lives in northern California on Wednesday (6 January). San Francisco's Golden Gate bridge was closed by a huge mudslide, which crushed dozens of cars in its wake, although no-one was injured. However, rescuers digging through a sea of mud in the city's affluent suburbs found 10 bodies. Two other people were feared dead, including a child who was trapped when a mudslide buried his home. The bodies of his two sisters were found in the wreckage. Hundreds of homes were destroyed and power was cut to 100,000 businesses and homes. Residents of the Leisure Lake Mobile Home Park, near Cataluna, discovered their home to be ironically named as surging floodwaters created a huge lake in the middle of the park. The mobile home owners went in with boats to salvage their belongings.
