  • Description

INTRODUCTION: Amid widespread strikes by millions of Italian workers, the Italian Government is continuing to seek support for a 530 million dollar loan from the International Monetary Fund.

SYNOPSIS: Plans for the loan have been opposed in parliament but the Prime Minister, Mr Giulio Andreotti was confident the main parties could agree after he'd met a delegation headed by his own party's president, Mr Aldo Moro.

The Government wanted the loan to boost its sagging economy. But the I.M.F. is reported to have attached conditions to the loan to cut inflation, and it is these conditions that have run into opposition in Parliament and the trade union movement. The Communist Party, whose support is vital to keep the minority government in power, has not yet decided whether it will back the loan agreement.
