    The African Development Fund has loaned 28 million pounds sterling (about 56 million dollars) to the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority to finance a sanitation project in the Ethiopian capital. The project is designed to serve the entire city in the future.

    Mr. Salem Mohamed Omeish, Acting President of the African Development Fund signed the agreement with Mr. Samuel Mengistu, the Ethiopian Ambassador to the Ivory Coast. The signing took place at the fund's headquarters in the Ivory Coast capital, Abidjan on Friday (16 January)
    The first phase of the project involving the construction of 37 miles (about 60 kms) of sewerage collectors, a pumping station and a treatment plant, will serve 110,000 people but when the whole network is completed it will serve 450,000 people.

    The total cost of the project is estimated at 45 million pounds sterling (about 90 million dollars). The loan, which is guaranteed by the Ethiopian government, will be repaid over 50 years including a grace period of ten years.
