  • Description

THE BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCE STARTED A ROUND-THE-CLOCK RADAR WATCH ON THE RHODESIAN-ZAMBIAN BORDER YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), AND AT THE SAME TIME FOUR OF THE R.A.F. "JAVELIN" FIGHTERS MADE A DEMONSTRATION FLIGHT OVER LUSAKA.

THE "JAVELINS" - TEN IN ALL - ARE BASED AT NDOLA, 200-MILES (322-KMS) NORTH OF LUSAKA. YESTERDAY'S FLIGHT WAS THE FIRST SINCE THEY ARRIVED AT NDOLA FROM NAIROBI ON FRIDAY. THEY MADE A TOTAL OF THREE RUNS AT 500-FT (140-METRES) ALONG LUSAKA'S MAIN STREET.

(ON SUNDAY, THE ZAMBIAN FOREIGN MINISTER SAID THAT BRITAIN HAD CHEATED ZAMBIA BY SENDING AIRCRAFT THAT WERE "COMPLETELY OUT OF DATE" TO AID THE COUNTRY'S DEFENCE. MR. KAPWEPWE SAID: "THE PLANES ARE OUT OF DATE - WE WANT MODERN WEAPONS". "WE CANNOT DEFEND OURSELVES WITH THESE PLANES.... WE ARE BEING BLUFFED THAT ASSISTANCE HAS BEEN GIVEN". A ROYAL AIR FORCE SPOKESMAN HAS DENIED THAT THE "JAVELINS" ARE OUT OF DATE, AND HAS STATED THAT THEY ARE THE MOST SUITABLE AIRCRAFT FOR THE JOB IN HAND.)
