United States Senator Mr Edmund Muskie met Israel Prime Minister Mrs. Golda Meir on Wednesday (January 6), the first day of a four-day visit to Israel. Senator Muskie is widely tipped for nomination as the Democrat candidate in the 1972 US Presidential elections.
Senator Muskie, who was accompanied by his wife, was taken to meet the Israeli Prime Minister by Mr Elitzur, Director of the North American division of the Israeli Foreign Office.
The Senator is hoping to met as many people as possible during his information trip to the Middle East. He began his stay in Israel with a speech to students at the Israel Museum, where he received a fine reception.
At the end of his four days in Israel Senator Muskie is due to visit the United Arab Republic and the Soviet Union. On the way back to the United States he hopes also to hold discussions with Chancellor Willi Brandt. Senator Muskie stressed that his visit was purely a fact-finding one, and that he did not intend to offer his services as a mediator in the Middle East.
