  • Description

A PEACEFUL CHRISTMAS IS FORECAST FOR CYPRUS -- A CONTRAST TO LAST YEAR WHEN COMMUNAL VIOLENCE DAMPENED FESTIVITIES. YESTERDAY (MONDAY) WAS THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE OUTBREAK OF THE TROUBLES, AND TODAY MANY TURKISH-CYPRIOTS ARE STILL LIVING AS REFUGEES. THEIR NUMBERS ARE BEING REDUCED GRADUALLY.

THE NICOSIA REFUGEE VILLAGE IS CALLED HAMET MENDRES. A FEW MONTH AGO, 6,000 REFUGEES LIVED THERE. TODAY THE POPULATION HAS BEEN REDUCED TO 3,000, HALF OF WHOM ARE CHILDREN.

THEY LIVE IN TENTS AND HASTILY-BUILT ALUMINIUM DWELLINGS. FOOD AND OTHER ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES ARE PROVIDED BY A TURKISH RELIEF ORGANISATION. WOMEN DO THEIR LAUNDRY IN OPEN TUBS, WHILE FAMILIES COOK OVER OPEN FIRES. OTHERS HAVE BEEN RESETTLED WITH RELATIVES OR FOUND HOMES IN QUIETER AREAS.

KOKKINA WAS WHERE THE TURKISH AIR FORCE MADE BOMBING RAIDS LAST AUGUST. U.N. TROOPS, WHO PATROL THE AREA, ARE LIKELY TO STAY THERE ANOTHER THREE MONTHS. THE SECURITY COUNCIL HAS AGREED TO AN EXTENSION OF THE PEACE-KEEPING MANDATE BEYOND THE DECEMBER 26 EXPIRY DATE.

AFTER THE BOMBINGS. MORE THAN 800 PEOPLE FLED TO CAVES. UNTIL A FEW DAYS AGO, SOME OF THEM STILL LIVED THERE, BUT NOW THEY LIVE IN TENTS. HOWEVER, CHILDREN STILL FIND THE CAVES A USEFUL PLACE FOR FUN AND GAMES.
