ROLL #1--EARLY PART OF THIS ROLL WAS SHOT IN AND AROUND THE MUNICIPALITY OF SAN NICOLAS, WHICH IS ABOUT SEVEN KILOMETRES FROM THE TOWN OF TAAL, WHICH IS THE CENTRE OF THE WHOLE RESCUE AND REFUGEE ORGANIZATION OF THE GOVERNMENT. THE MUNICIPALITY OF SAN NICOLAS IS ONE OF THE NEAREST "SAFE" AREAS TO OBSERVE THE ERUPTING VOLCANO. AS THE ERUPTIONS CONTINUE, HOWEVER, THIS COULD BECOME AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AREA. SCENES FROM THIS ROLL SHOW SOME REFUGEE WORK BEING DONE, AND QUITE A BIT OF FOOTAGE OF THE ERUPTION. IT IS HERE THAT THE VOLCANOLOGISTS OF THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT WEATHER BUREAU HAVE THEIR OBSERVATION STATION. IN AN INTERVIEW WITH ARTURO ALCARAZ, CHIEF VOLCANOLOGIST FOR THE GOVERNMENT, HE STATED THAT THIS TYPE OF VOLCANO HAS NO REPEAT NO LAVA, AND THE EXTRUSIONS CONSIST OF MUD, SAND, AND STEAM. HE ALSO SAID THAT THE PRESENT CRATER IS FEEDING OFF THE SURROUNDING LAND OF PULO ISLAND, IN WHICH IT IS SITUATED. THE ORIGINAL EXPLOSION WAS SEVERAL HUNDRED METERS FROM THE WATER, BUT THE RESULTING EXPLOSIONS HAVE EATEN A CHANNEL TO THE WATERS OF THE LAKE. THE DANGER OF A NEW AND GREATER EXPLOSION IS VERY GREAT. AS THE WATERS OF THE LAKE POUR INTO THE FISSURE, THE BUILDING OF STEAM MAY CREATE AN EVEN GREATER EXPLOSION. FOR THIS REASON, MANY OF THE TOWNS SURROUNDING THE LAKE ARE NOW BEGINNING TO EVACUATE PEOPLE TO SAFER AREAS. ANOTHER DANGER COULD COME FROM A DEEP EXPLOSION THAT COULD CREATE A TIDAL WAVE THAT MAY DROWN PEOPLE LIVING ALONG THE SHORE OF THE LAKE AREA. LAST SHOTS ON THE ROLL SHOW THE VOLCANO FROM THE BANCA (NATIVE FISHING BOAT) THAT WE HIRED TO REACH THE MOST DEVASTATED AREA OPPOSITE THE EXPLOSION SITE. THE SHOTS OF THE VOLCANO FROM THE BANCA SHOW THE HEAT OF THE WATER. IT IS SO HOT THAT IT IS STEAMING CONSTANTLY.

ROLL #2--THIS ROLL WAS TAKEN IN THE BARRIO (A SMALL CLUSTER OF FAMILIES IN A MUNICIPALITY) OF BILIBINWANG AND BARRIO BANYAGA OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF ANGONCILLIO. THIS WAS ONE OF THE HARDEST HIT OF THE AREAS DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM THE VOLCANO, AS YOU CAN SEE THE MOUNTAIN BEHIND THE VOLCANO SERVED TO THROW THE BLAST TOWARD THIS AREA. WHICH IN TURN IS SURROUNDED BY MOUNTAINS. THIS SERVED TO CONTAIN THE EXPLOSION AND MAKE THIS AREA AN EXTREMELY UNHEALTHY PLACE TO BE IN. HOWEVER, MANY PEOPLE FORM THIS AREA ESCAPED. IT IS STILL UNKNOWN AS TO HOW MANY PERSONS PERISHED. WE SAW ONLY ONE BODY, BUT MANY HAD ALREADY BEEN BURIED. THE NUMBER OF CATTLE KILLED IS APPALLING, AND THE STENCH IS ALMOST UNBEARABLE. IN THIS TYPE OF FREAK EXPLOSION, THOSE ANIMALS AND PEOPLE IN ONE PLACE DIE, WHILE OTHERS, WHO HAVE SOME PROTECTION LIVE. THIS EXPLAINS THE NUMBER OF ANIMALS STILL ALIVE, WANDERING AMONG THE DEAD. THE MUD, SAND AND SILT IS IN MANY PLACES AS DEEP AS FIVE FEET. THIS IS SHOWN IN THE SHOTS WHERE THE DEPOSITED MATERIAL HAS BEEN WASHED OUT BY RAINS. THE WHOLE AREA WAS PLANTED TO RICE AND CORN, AND VERY LUSH WITH GREENERY. AS YOU CAN SEE IT NOW LOOKS LIKE A BLEAK, BARREN, DESOLATE DESERT. THE COWS SHOWN HERE ARE STARVING BECAUSE ALL OF THE FOOD THAT THEY NORMALLY EAT IS COVERED BY MUD AND SAND. THE PHILIPPINES IS FAMOUS FOR ITS BATANGAS (A PROVINCE) BEEF AND THIS WHOLE AREA IS IN BATANGAS. ON THE WAY BACK TO SAN NICOLAS I EXPOSED THE REST OF THIS ROLL ON THE VOLCANO AS WE PASSED IT.
