Background: British athletes Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe, both world record holders in their events, returned to winning form in Oslo's Bislett Stadium on June 28, bursting through the opposition to take first place in their respective races. Ovett won the 1500 metres in a time of 3 minutes, 33.81 seconds, second fastest in the world this year. Rounding the final bend as Ovett moved out to challenge for the lead, Ray Flynn of Ireland lost his balance and the Spanish competitor, Jose Abascal fell. Coe, moving easily and smoothly throughout, chalked up an 800 metres victory in 1 minute, 43.80 seconds, a time which only three other men have ever beaten. He began to apply pressure 300 metres from the finish, sprinting clear to reach the tape some 10 metres ahead of the pack.
