Background: Venetian Gondoliers yesterday (Monday) dropped a threat to burn their picturesque craft but maintained a strong protest against motor launch competition.
The protest made to the city authorities, complained that the ever-increasing number of motor launches plying the canals "competes so strongly with the gondolas that in time gondoliers will disappear".
Earlier today Gondoliers pulled out of the water and threatened to burn their craft in Saint Mark's Square unless they received safety guarantees.
They alleged that their gondolas at anchor were being damaged by the wake of passing motor-launches, and that one had been flooded and sunk.
