  • Description

The one hundred and nine passengers and crew aboard a West German Boeing jet all survived when their 'plane landed in flames at Delhi Airport in the early hours of Thursday morning (20 December).

The passengers and crew leapt for their lives as the Lufthansa Airlines jet screeched to a halt on the runway. An hour later the fuselage and wings had been destroyed and only part of the tail section remained intact.

Many passengers were German engineers working in the Far East, on their way home for the Christmas holiday.

One passenger said they had been singing carols when an engine caught fire just before touchdown.

Seven people, including the pilot, were taken to hospital.

Airport officials said the Boeing 707 may have hit something as it came in to land in one of the worst fogs the Indian capital had seen in recent years.

Most of the passengers on the 'plane, which came from Tokyo, Hong Kong and Bangkok, on its way to Frankfurt, had to walk two miles to the Airport terminal.
