    Belgian motorcyclist, Roger De Coster, increased his lead in the World 500 cc Motocross Championship with one first place on Sunday (23 May) in the sixth round at Helsinki, Finland. De Coster now has 124 points, ahead of Adolf Weil of West Germany with 103 points and Gerrit Wolsink of Holland with 94 points. Wolsink was the top scorer on Sunday, coming second in both heats.

    the first heat was won by United States rider, Brad Lackey(riding a Husqvarna) with Wolsink (Suzuki) second and British rider, Vic Eastwood (CTM) in third place. De Coster (Suzuki) won the second race, again with Wolsink second and Graham Noyce (Maico) of Britain coming third. Noyce, a 19-year-old newcomer to the sport is being tipped as a future Motocross world champion.

    For the second round running, American rider Pierre Karsmakers was forced out of the racing with mechanical problems. Ridding the only Honda in the event, Karsmaker was making excellent time when he dropped out with a seized piston. In the fifth round in Sweden, he missed one race with frame problems. Until Sunday's mechanical problems, Karsmakers had been lying fourth on the World Championship points table.
