  • Description

A NICOSIA REPORT TODAY STATED THAT FIRING BETWEEN THE GREEK AND TURK HAD BROKEN OUT IN THE VILLAGE OF AYIOS THEODOROS, WEST OF LARNACA. A CYPRUS GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID IT WAS STARTED BY TURKISH ELEMENTS. MEANWHILE, FURTHER REPORTS HAVE COME FROM GREECE THAT INTERVENTION BY TURKEY IN CYPRUS WILL LEAD TO WAR BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

THE RECRUITING OF THESE POLICE FOLLOWS PRESIDENT MAKARIOS'S ANNOUNCEMENT ON TUESDAY THAT HE INTENDED TO BOOST THE RANKS OF THIS FORCE BY 5,000. HE SAID THE SITUATION IN CYPRUS MADE IT NECESSARY TO STRENGTHEN AND REORGANISE THE ISLAND'S SECURITY. THE REINFORCEMENTS WOULD FORM A SPECIAL PART OF THE POLICE FORCE. THEY WOULD BE EITHER UNPAID PART OR FULLTIME VOLUNTEERS. THOSE SELECTED WOULD BE GIVEN SPECIAL UNIFORMS AND SPECIAL IDENTITY CARDS.

PRESIDENT MAKARIOS'S ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RECRUITING DRIVE WAS LINKED WITH A CALL TO THE IRREGULARS TO HAND IN THEIR ARMS.
