  • Description

What claims to be the largest "participator" sports event in the world took place last week (May 20/21) on a lazy stretch of the Chattahootchee River, near Atlanta, Georgia.

The event, a raft race, attracted an estimated twenty-thousand people in about five-thousand rafts.

Officially a race--with trophies for the winners--the event this year inspired more of a carefree, holiday spirit than competitive effort.

The race has become an annual event since it first took place three years ago, with fifty rafts, following a challenge between a College fraternity and a local radio station.

Sponsors now hope the race will help people see the river's potential as a recreation area, and encourage them to join in the fight to stop commercial development spoiling the scenic quality of the area.
