    MINISTERS FROM A NUMBER OF EUROPEAN AND AFRICAN COUNTRIES ATTENDED THE OPENING ON THURSDAY (8 JANUARY) OF AN INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS SEMINAR IN RABAT. THE SEMINAR, OPENED BY THE MOROCCAN MINISTRY OF POSTS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS UNION AND THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME, HAS AS ITS THEME SATELLITE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FROM PROGRESS AND CO-OPERATION.

    THE MEETING WAS OPENED BY THE MOROCCAN MINISTER OF POSTS WHO ADDRESSED THE DELEGATES ASSEMBLED IN THE RABAT HILTON.

    AMONG THOSE ATTENDING THE CONFERENCE ARE DELEGATES FROM GHANA, ALGERIA, THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, MALI, TUNISIA, MAURITANIA, ITALY, SPAIN AND SENEGAL.

    THE MEETING FOLLOWS THE OPENING NEAR RABAT OF THE FIRST SATELLITE RECEIVING STATION TO BE BUILT IN AFRICA. THE STATION, AT SOUK EL ARAB DES SEHOULS, 19 MILES (36 KMS) FROM RABAT, WAS OPENED BY KING HASSAN OF MOROCCO CN WEDNESDAY (7 JANUARY). DURING THE OPENING CEREMONY, KING HASSAN AND AMERICAN PRESIDENT RICHARD NIXON TALKED TO ONE ANOTHER IN A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION BOUNCED OFF A TELESTAR SATELLITE BY THE MOROCCAN STATION.

    THE RABAT TELECOMMUNICATIONS SEMINAR IS EXPECTED TO LAST UNTIL JANUARY 20.
