Background: The French government under pressure from the Spanish authorities is taking a tougher line with Basque separatists living in south-western France. Police arrested twenty Spanish Basque in the last week of January, deported seven of them back to Spain and ordered the rest to stay out of the French Basque country near the border.

SYNOPSIS: On Saturday (3 February), the border between France and Spain was closed by the French authorities to prevent Spanish Basques attending planned demonstration in the French town of Bayonne. Police feared that some people trying to cross the border, who they turned back.... may have been members of the basque guerrilla organisation, ETA which has claimed responsibility for t he deaths of twelve of the eighteen people already killed in political violence in Spain this year.

Despite the border closure, the Bayonne demonstration was well attended. Its main aim was to protest at the arrest of the twenty Basque separatists, earlier in the week. Seven of the Basques were expelled to Spain on the grounds that their papers were not in order. The others arrested were driven by French police to Valensoles in the French Alps. They have been banned from living in the French Basque country and must report to police twice a day or face expulsion from France.

As Basques supporters were marching in Bayonne, across the border in Spain, the violence continued. Gunmen shot dead one officer and wounded another in a machine gun attack outside the civil guard barracks in the town of Andoain.
