Background: Rhodesian Government officials on Thursday (1 February) took a party of newsmen around a strictly-controlled security area where raids have been carried out by armed guerrillas recently. They included a farm where woman was killed and her husband injured on 25 January. Most of the attacks have occurred in the tobacco-growing Centenary district, near the borders with Zambia and Mozambique.
The newsmen were taken to the Centenary Club, where white farmers gather for drinks, gossip and games. The club is still a much-used venue, but now the farmers bring a gun instead of a cricket bat.
Club members chatted to the newsmen, but spoke little about the current situation.
Some, however, said they thought the raids had often been women, and sometimes people of "moderate" views rather than strong white-supremacy advocates.
SYNOPSIS: At Rhodesia's Centenary Golf Club, farmers traditionally gather from their remote homesteads in the tobacco country bordering Zambia and mozambique.
This week there were some strange faces. Representatives of the world's new services. They'd been brought to Centenary by the Rhodesian government, who wanted to demonstrated the high morale of the farmers who face the threat of border raiders.
The newsmen were also taken to the farm where Mr. J.C. Klyneham used to live, near Centenary. It's now a shall mr. klyneham was one of the farmers who faced the border raiders in person. They came at night, with guns, grenades and mortars. Mrs. Klyneham was killed and Mr. Klyneham injured. The raiders escaped, but security's now stepped up.
