The President of FRELIMO (The Front for the Liberation of Mozambique), Mr. Samora Machel, left?

  • Description

The President of FRELIMO (The Front for the Liberation of Mozambique), Mr. Samora Machel, left Tanzania on Saturday (24 May) for the start of a triumphal tour of his own country before Mozambique attains independence on 25 June. His departure from Dard Es Salaam airport marked the formal end of his long exile from Mozambique - much of which has been spent in Tanzania.

A large crowd of supporters turned out to give him a warm and emotional send-off. The official farewell party was led by Tanzania's President, Dr. Julius Nyerere, and other members of the Government. The event had all the trappings of a State occasion, including a group of exuberant dancers.

Mr. Machel boarded an aircraft which had been freshly painted with the gold and red symbols of the People's Liberation Army of Mozambique, which is the new title of the FRELIMO movement. His Vice President, Mr. Marcelino Dos Santos, left before him in a separate aircraft.

Mr. Machel's return to Mozambique was his first official homecoming since the end of the ten year old war against Portuguese colonial rule. In a speech at Dar Es Salaam airport he said "Our victory is Tanzania's victory".

During the war Tanzania had provided most of the major bases for the FRELIMO forces.

After leaving Tanzania, Mr. Machel flew to Mueda, a former Portuguese airbase in the north of the country. His country-wide tour is due to and with a triumphant entry into the capital, Lourenco Marques, just before independence day when he is expected to become the country's first President.
