    The Argentine Cabinet and labour and congressional leaders met President Maria Estela Peron on Wednesday (27 August) for urgent talks on the military crisis in Argentina.

    President Peron called the meeting at her official residence in the capital Buenos Aires as confusion reigned over the appointment of a new army commander.

    Hours after the military had said the present commander, general Alberto Numa Laplane's resignation had been accepted there was no official confirmation from the presidential residence. This was despite the army commander's declaration that his decision was ???.

    President Peron's refusal to accept General Laplane's resignation earlier caused fears of an imminent military coup d' etat. Crack regiments in battle uniform were deployed round the presidential residence ... apparently to repel any attack by rebel generals.

    The eight-man cabinet and its advisers were meeting at the same time as rebel generals who outside the capital had named General Carlos Delia Larocca as interim Army Commander-in-Chief.

    The Army them went on a state of alert under orders issued by General Larroca. This followed Senora Peron's initial failure to ratify General Laplane's resignation.

    But President Peron was later reported to have accepted the resignation after intense military pressure.

    General Larocca, a 52-year-old cavalry officer and Olympic show jumper, was awaiting his official appointment.

    In urgent cabinet meeting was called. The eight-man team and labour and congressional leaders arrived at the residence to try and solve the military crisis. Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the city, rebel generals were also meeting. They appointed an interim army commander, General Larocca who later ordered the military into a state of alert until Senora Peron accepted General Laplane's resignation. The President was later reported to have done this after intense military pressure. General Larocca then flew to Buenos Aires to await an official appointment.
