  • Description

South Vietnamese Marines today (Friday) fought back an attempt by North Vietnamese forces to outflank the northern defences of the old imperial capital Hue, as the battle for control of the important Highway One increases in intensity.

Today's action follows an amphibious landing by more than 300 men of the Seventh South Vietnamese Marine Battalion on Wednesday (24 May) on the beaches 25 miles (40 kms) north of Hue. The action was filmed by Visnews cameraman Neil Davis.

The landing was planned as a surprise attempt to divert the North Vietnamese attention from Hue.

The North Vietnamese dug in near the beach and United States air strikes had to be called in to clear the positions.

More than 2,000 refugees evacuated villages nearby and were taken to South Vietnamese controlled areas.

As the South Vietnamese Marines pushed deeper inland, air strikes were stepped up. The Marines claimed to have killed at least 200 enemy troops.
