  • Description

A battle between whale hunters and conservationists came to head on Monday (26 June) with the opening of the International Whaling Commission's annual meeting in London. During the five day meeting, the commission will be discussing a fiercely contested proposal to stop hunting all whales for the next 10 years.

Concern that many species of the world's largest creature have been hunted close to extinction has prompted the proposals from the United States, which refrains from hunting whales and refuses to import any whale products.

As Monday's meeting started, the Soviet Union, Japan and Norway agreed to station observers on each other's whaling ships in the Antarctic from the start of the next hunting season. the idea is to guard against the hunters exceeding the catch quotas laid down by the commission.

While the meeting went ahead, demonstrators carrying "Save the Whale" placards paraded outside the building. This coverage also includes footage from the Visnews Library of Japanese whalers operating off the Peruvian coast a year ago.
