  • Description

President Moussa Traore of Mali made an official visit to Algeria on Monday (6 August) -- just hours after Mauritania and the Polisario Front guerrilla movement signed a peace accord in which Mauritania renounced all claims to the southern half of the Western Sahara.

SYNOPSIS: President Traore was greeted on his arrival by the Algerian President, Mr. Chadli Benjedid. Algerian has been involved int he Western Sahara dispute since it began in 1976, mainly as backers of the Polisario guerrillas.

President Traore is a member of the Organisation of African Unity Council concerned with the Western Sahara. He called the treaty "a step towards peace in the region". A much more conciliatory tone than that taken by Morocco. Morocco has borne the brunt of Polisario guerrilla attacks during the past three years, and it says that a withdrawal by Mauritania would lead it to take "proper steps" to ensure its own security. Morocco has vowed to continue the war so that it can hold on to its zone in the Western Sahara -- a statement which has undoubtedly caused concern within the OAU. The Moroccans also say that mauritania will be breaking an international agreement if they withdraw.
