  • Description

A CYPRUS GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID TODAY (FRIDAY) THAT THE STRIFE-TORN ISLAND WAS "PERFECTLY QUIET EVERYWHERE". APART FROM A MINOR INCIDENT, THE NIGHT, TOO, HAD BEEN QUIET.

ALL THE SAME, TENSION CONTINUES TO RUN HIGH. EXTRA BRITISH TROOPS ARE BEING FLOWN INTO TO BOLSTER OVERWORKED UNITS ALREADY THERE.

THEY ARE NOT THE ONLY TROOPS IN THE ISLAND. BOTH TURKEY AND GREECE HAVE CONTINGENTS, ACTING AS "SECURITY FORCES". THEY ARE STATIONED IN THE ISLAND UNDER THE 1959 ZURICH AND LONDON AGREEMENTS, WHICH GAVE CYPRUS HER INDEPENDENCE.

YESTERDAY (THURSDAY), THE TURKISH ARMY UNIT HELD AN OPEN DAY FOR THE PRESS IN THE TURKISH QUARTER OF NICOSIA. A FAMILY'S VILLA WAS USED AS A TEMPORARY HEADQUARTERS.

THE FAMILY HAD LITTLE TO FEAR FROM OUTSIDE ATTACK. A MACHINE-GUN NEST WAS SET UP ON THE ROOF AND OTHER GUARD-POSTS ESTABLISHED -- SIMULATING "LIVE" WARFARE CONDITIONS.

NEARBY, ARTILLERY TROOPS SHOWED HOW THEY WOULD PREPARE FOR TROUBLE. MACHINE GUNS WERE MOUNTED ON JEEPS AND AIMED AT A MOCK TARGET. OTHER TROOPS ARMED WITH WALKIE-TALKIE SETS FLASHED THE LATEST "ENEMY" MOVEMENTS TO HEADQUARTERS.

THEN IT WAS THE INFANTRY'S TURN. THEY SHOWED THEIR PACES AS THEY ADVANCED ON ANOTHER VILLA. AFTER INCHING THEIR WAY TOWARDS THE TARGET, THE COMMANDING OFFICER SIGNALLED THEM TO STORM THE HOUSE.

THE TROOPS BURST THROUGH THE DOOR AND MADE A CAREFUL SEARCH TO FLUSH OUT ANYONE HOLED UP. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ROUNDED OFF WITH BAYONET DRILL.

BOTH THE GREEKS AND THE TURKS HAVE INTENSIFIED TRAINING IN RECENT WEEKS. THE GREEKS BECAUSE OF TURKISH INVASION SCARES; THE TURKS TO HELP ANY TURKISH "INTERVENTION".

THE PRESENCE OF BOTH SIDES HAS BEEN ONE OF THE CHIEF REASONS FOR THE DEADLOCK ON THE QUESTION OF A PERMANENT PEACE-KEEPING FORCE.

THE GREEKS WOULD LIKE A UNITED NATIONS FORCE. BUT THE TURKS SAY THEIR TROOPS MUST REMAIN -- OTHERWISE THE FUTURE OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS MIGHT BE JEOPARDISED.
