Background: SWEDEN GOES TO THE POLLS ON SUNDAY TO ELECT A NEW PARLIAMENT, AND AFTER 36 YEARS OF RULE UNDER THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS, THE ELECTORATE FACES THE CHOICE OF CONTINUING THE SOCIAL DEMOCRAT RULE OR HAVING A COALITION GOVERNMENT. AS ELECTION DAY DRAWS NEAR, THE STREETS OF STOCKHOLM ARE ALIVE WITH PARTY POSTERS, LOUDSPEAKER VANS AND SPEECHES.

PRIME MINISTER TAGE ERLANDER HAS SAID HIS SOCIAL DEMOCRAT PARTY WILL RESIGN UNLESS HE IS GIVEN A CLEAR MAJORITY. BUT UNITED IN OPPOSITION TO HIM ARE THE CENTRE PARTY AND THE LIBERALS, WHO WILL FORM A COALITION IF THEY WIN. ANOTHER FACTOR IN THE ELECTION IS THE COMMUNIST PARTY, ALTHOUGH THE COMMUNISTS' POSITION HAS SLIPPED SINCE THE WARSAW PACT INVASION OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA.

THE CHANCES OF THIS BEING MR. ERLANDER'S LAST ELECTION ARE HIGH, SINCE IN THE LAST LOCAL ELECTIONS IN THE COUNTRY, IN 1966, THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS RECEIVED LESS THAN HALF THE VOTES - THEIR LOWEST SHARE OF THE POLL SINCE 1934.

THE BIGGEST COMPLAINTS AGAINST THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT ARE UNDER FOUR MAIN HEADINGS, NAMELY THE HOUSING SHORTAGE, THE SHORTAGE OF HOSPITAL TREATMENT THE HIGH RATE OF TAXATION AND THE GOVERNMENT'S FOREIGN POLICY.

HOWEVER, A PUBLIC OPINION POLL GIVES THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS A 47.6 PERCENT OF THE VOTES TO BE CAST.

MEANWHILE THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN IS HOTTING UP AS SWEDEN PREPARES TO DECIDE ITS FUTURE GOVERNMENT ON SUNDAY.
