Background: THE CASE OF MR ANDERSON GANYILE, THE PONDO LEADER WHO RETURNED TO HIS EXILE IN THE BRITISH PROTECTORATE OF BASUTOLAND JANUARY 20, AFTER FOUR MONTHS IMPRISONMENT IN THE TRANSKEI, IS SAID TO HAVE WIDE IMPLICATIONS FOR BRITAIN IN ITS RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE SOUTH AFRICAN REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT NOW THAT THE COMMONWEALTH TIE HAS BEEN SEVERED.

MR GANYILE, WHO WAS ABDUCTED BY SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE FROM BASUTOLAND AND KEPT 'INCOMMUNICADO' IN THE GAOL, WAS INTERVIEWED JANUARY 31 AT QUACHAS NEK - A VILLAGE ON THE BASUTOLAND-SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER:
GANYILE'S ABDUCTION FROM THE BRITISH PROTECTORATE; IN AUGUST, 1961; HIS IMPRISONMENT; THE PRELIMINARY HABEAS CORPUS PROCEEDINGS; THE GOVERNMENT'S RETALIATION BY CHARGING GANYILE WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER AND INCITEMENT TO MURDER; AND THE ULTIMATE RELEASE AND APOLOGY WITH EXPLANATION BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN MINISTER FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, MR LUOW, ARE ALL MATTERS WHICH HAVE BEARING ON CHANGES PREDICTED IN A BRITISH BILL TO REGULATE AFFAIRS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

ON JAN 24, A DURBAN LAWYER, MR ROLEY ARENSTEIN, SUBMITTED A THIRD CLAIM FOR 20,000 RAND (GBP10,000) AGAINST THE SOUTH AFRICAN MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND SIX POLICEMEN, ARISING OUT OF THE ARREST OF MR GANYILE, AND TWO OTHER MEN.
