  • Description

United States policies towards Latin America were fiercely attacked at the Organisation of American States meeting in Washington yesterday (Friday). Chilean Deputy Foreign Minister Anibal Palma, speaking to the organisation's General Assembly, charged that Washington was using economic pressures in Latin America for political motives.

Senor Palma alleged that U.S. officials had connived an attempt to prevent Marxist President Salvador Allende coming to power in Chile In 1970. He also attacked Washington for applying strong economic pressures since Chile nationalised United States owned copper mines.

In our extract of the speech, Senor Palma, speaking in Spanish, said that Chile is currently fighting for economic independence. He added that United States economic pressures were against the principles of international non-intervention. He claimed that Washington was attempting to influence the finance policy of the World Bank against Chile.
