    Background: The ruler of Ethiopia, Emperor Haile Selassie, has begun a nine-day state visit to Italy -- the nation which thirty five years ago invaded his country and sent him in to exile.

    The ruler's visit to Italy is designed to heal the wounds of the pre-war invasion by the fascist forces of Mussolini. Relations between Italy and Ethiopia have gradually improved over the past fifteen years.

    The Ethiopian monarch said his visit to Italy was designed to show that former enemies could co-exist in a world made nervous by the prospect of war.
