  • Description

MILLIONS OF PEOPLE THROUGHOUT EUROPE WATCHED ON TELEVISION AS FOUR MOUNTAINEERS TODAY (SUNDAY) CLIMBED THE 985 FEET (300 METRES) EIFFEL TOWER. THE OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED CLIMB CELEBRATED THE FAMOUS LANDMARK'S 75TH. BIRTHDAY.

THE MEN, THREE FRENCHMEN AND A BRITON, WITH EXPERIENCE GAINED IN THE CONQUEST OF PEAKS THROUGHOUT EUROPE AND ASIA, WERE WARNED BEFORE HAND BY ANXIOUS POLICEMEN ABOUT THE PERILS OF THE CLIMB: HIGH WINGS AND SQUALLS CONSTANTLY BEAT AT THEM THROUGHOUT THE ASCENT.

AFTER THE 5-HOUR-LONG CLIMB, THE BRITON, IAN MCNAUGHT-DAVIS, SAID HE HAD FOUND THE EIFFEL TOWER ONE OF HIS MOST FRIGHTENING CLIMBS. THE WIND HAD PULLED AND TUGGED AS HE HAULED HIS WAY UP THE SLIPPERY GIRDERS. BUT, AFTERWARDS, ALL FOUR LOOKED CHEERFUL.

THROUGHOUT THE CLIMB TELEVISION CAMERAS - ONE MOUNTED ON A HOVERING HELICOPTER - AND A RADIO COMMENTARY BY ONE THE CLIMBERS GAVE THE VAST TELEVISION A DRAMATIC, INTIMATE PICTURE OF THE ASCENT.
