  • Description

The world's top golfers are preparing to do battle with the tough Turnberry course in Scotland for this year's Open. Already blustery conditions have played havoc with their practice scores. Jack Nicklaus is showing the form that's made him the sport's greatest money winner but although he's favourite, pundits are not discounting the possibility of Britain's former golfing idol, Tony Jacklin, rising to the challenge again.

SYNOPSIS: Conditions at Turnberry have been less than pleasant with storm force winds lashing the Scottish coast. The ninth tee leaves almost no margin for error but offers a perfect midway vantage point.

The competition begins next Wednesday and lasts for four days.

Henry Cotton, a golfing legend in his own time, was out today with the former British star Tony Jacklin. Lately Jackline has been working hard to lift his game.

But without doubt favourite is the American giant, Jack Nicklaus, who seems in fine form. At 70 years of age, Henry Cotton, still shoots low scores. A triple British Open winner who began his major professional achievements in 1927. A legend in his own time, although a little out of touch. In contrast, Nicklaus the master.

The press marquee will be the nerve centre. 'Turnberry' comes from a Gaelic word which means the town of a loud murmuring noise, a particularly apt description in light of next week's tournament. As yet, no-one is firmly predicating who'll take the honours. On form it must be Nicklaus but that will be up to Turnberry, the weather and time.
