  • Description

The continued detention in Spain of the leader of the outlawed Spanish Communist Party, Senor Santiago Carrillo, has led to further protests throughout Spain, France and Italy.

SYNOPSIS: There were left wing demonstrations in Madrid, the Spanish capital, following his arrest, and in Paris on Monday night (27 December), communists led a second major protest demonstration in the French capital.

Senor Carrillo was arrested by Spanish authorities after he gave a secret news conference. He returned to Spain ten months ago after 38 years in exile. After his arrest, Senor Carrillo was reported to have turned down an offer to return immediately to exile. Legal sources in Madrid said that being a Spaniard on Spanish soil - even though illegally - he could not be forcibly sent out of the country.

In Monday night's Paris demonstration, about five thousand people led by the Head of the International Department of the French Communist Party, Monsieur Jean Kanapa, marched on the Spanish Embassy. This was also the site of the earlier demonstration, but this time riot police kept them from their objective. The demonstrators had to be satisfied with marching down an adjacent street chanting "free Carrillo", and "freedom for Spain".

The French Communist Party has said Spain will not return to true democracy until all political parties are recognised.
