  • Description

The Montreal Olympic Committee has declared the Olympic village is ready to receive the thousands of athletes participating in the Games next month.

SYNOPSIS: In the next few weeks, the Village will open its doors to athletes from all over the world. It is situated in one of Montreal's largest parks. And the athletes will reside in two pyramid buildings. The 19 floors will lodge the visitors in 980 units. There are five different types of apartments which can each accommodate from five to 14 residents. All have air conditioning and ample storage space. The buildings also have refreshment and recreation facilities. They will provide the base for the many delegations expected for the games.

The designers have aimed for practical, clean designs. According to the Olympic Committee, they have also taken care to ensure the village reflects a friendly atmosphere, where the athletes can relax and feel at home. The village is conveniently located close to the main Olympic sites -- the stadium, swimming hall and velodrome. And the centre of Montreal can be easily reached by the public transport system. The games' organisers purposely built the village next to the Olympic complex to make it quick and easy for athletes to reach the competition sites.

Security plans for the games are well advanced. A 4,200 strong corps of men and women will guard the athletes in the village. There will be no public access to apartments, and entry will be restricted to lifts manned by security personnel. with memories of the Munich Olympics, the Israeli team will be placed on the top floor. Immediately below will be the Canadian contingent. While the floors below them are devoted entirely to security personnel. But, the games' organisers do not think that security will be oppressive.

Closed circuit television will monitor the village and adjacent Olympic complex, 24 hours a day. Meanwhile, the Olympic Committee awaits the first arrivals for the games. There had been fears that the village would not be completed in time. However, the organisers have declared the village ready with some of the apartments now occupied by games' personnel.

Elsewhere, the organisers have said that the main Olympic complex will be finished for the opening of the games. The construction of the site has been overshadowed by labour disputes which caused serious delays. But they were resolved and the workforce has been working in continuous shifts to make up for lost time. And, in a few weeks, the terraces of these impressive buildings will be alive with people.
