  • Description

GOWON IN MOTORCADE: HALL: NEWS CONFERENCE: GOWON SPEAKING (SOF)

TRANSCRIPT: GOWON: "LET ME SAY FROM THE ONSET THAT I REGARD THIS AS A NIGERIAN PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED BY NIGERIANS. OUR EXPERIENCE OVER THE LAST TWO AND A HALF YEARS DOES NOT ENCOURAGE US TO BELIEVE THAT MANY OF THOSE WHO OFFER THEIR HANDS OF FRIENDSHIP ARE ACTUALLY FRIENDS OR THAT THE ADVICE WE RECEIVE FROM SO MANY QUARTERS IS HONEST AND HELPFUL. OUR PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN COMPLICATED BY FOREIGNERS WHO THINK THEY UNDERSTAND NIGERIANS OR AFRICANS BETTER THAN WE DO OURSELVES. SO-CALLED HUMANITARIANS HAVE DELIBERATELY FANNED THE FLAMES AND HELPED TO PROLONG THE SUFFERING OF OUR PEOPLE. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS SOME WILL REGARD IT AS THEIR MAIN TASK TO BELITTLE OUR EFFORTS AND THE EFFORTS OF THOSE, WHO ARE GENUINELY TRYING TO HELP IN A DIFFICULT SITUATION. FOR OUR PART, WE HAVE MADE IT OUR DUTY TO ENSURE THAT WE DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO BRING RELIEF TO OUR PEOPLE AND TO ENSURE AN EARLY RETURN TO NORMALCY TO ALL PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. THIS WE PROMISE OURSELVES."

QUESTION: "AT THE MOMENT, THE PROBLEM DOWN THERE,, AS YOU YOURSELF KNOW, I THINK, SEEMS TO BE TRANSPORT. NOW WHY IS IT THAT YOU WON'T USE ULI AIRSTRIP TO FLY IN LIGHT SUPPLIES.... (INDISTINCT)....?

GOWON: "WE HAVE ALREADY AUTHORISED THAT ALL TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT THAT WE AUTHORISE TO BRING SUCH TRANSPORT COULD FLY TO PORT HARCOURT, ENUGU AND CALABAR. AND THE QUESTION OF ULI...PLEASE LET US GET RID OF ULI HERE A NOW OUT OF OUR MINDS. I THINK IT HAS BEEN USED TOO MUCH IN INTERNATIONAL POLITICS. SO LET US GET IT OUT OF INTERNATIONAL POLITICS."
