  • Description

Athens yesterday (Thursday) was firmly in the grip of the military regime following the collapse of King Constantine's attempted counter-coup. The young King has escaped to Italy, and in his former capital heavily armed soldiers guarded his palace.

While his soldiers manned tanks, armoured cars and machine gun nests, military strongman Colonel George Papadopoulos met reporters. Laughing and joking, he dismissed the King's abortive attempt to unseat him as being absurd and inconceivable.

And the Colonel's government was stripping the symbols of monarchy from public view. The gates of the royal palace in Athens were closed and the grounds deserted. King Constantine's famous personal bodyguard of killed soldiers, the Evzones, had been removed from their posts outside the palace to join other soldiers in a nearby barracks in ordinary battledress.

Royal crests were painted over, the Royal flag was lowered, and photographs of King Constantine and his Danish-born wife Queen Anne-Marie were removed from government offices and public buildings.

It all underlined the humiliating defeat of the 27-year-old King. He's still in Rome with his family, and it's not known whether they will stay in Italy or go on either to Copenhagen or London.
