  • Description

VISNEWS HAS JUST OBTAINED THIS FILM FROM AN AMATEUR CAMERAMAN WHO WAS IN THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA RECENTLY. THE FILM, SHOT BY A CANADIAN SPENDING HIS HONEYMOON IN CHINA, SHOWS THE ACTIVITIES OF RED GUARDS IN THE STREETS OF CANTON, AND THE COMPARATIVE QUIET OF THE COUNTRYSIDE WHERE FARMWORK IS PROGRESSING NORMALLY.

CANTON IS THE CHIEF CITY OF SOUTHERN CHINA. THE CITY'S NATURAL POPULATION IS ABOUT THREE MILLION, BUT IN RECENT WEEKS RED GUARDS HAVE FLOODED INTO THE CITY FROM THE COUNTRYSIDE.

THE RED GUARDS THRONGING THE STREETS IN CANTON COPIED THE SAYINGS OF CHAIRMAN MAO TSE-TUNG FROM THE WALL NEWSPAPERS AND POSTERS, AND QUEUED BY THOUSANDS FOR FREE BUS RIDES ROUND THE CITY.

HOWEVER, THE MOST POPULAR ACTIVITY WAS DEMONSTRATING, AND THE FILM SHOWS THE FAMILIAR SCENE OF THOUSANDS OF RED GUARDS CARRYING PICTURES OF CHAIRMAN MAO AS THEY MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS, EACH WITH A COPY OF CHAIRMAN MAO'S WORKS.

OUTSIDE THE CITY, AGRICULTURAL WORKERS OBEYED THE CALL TO STAY AT THEIR WORK. THE OLDER PEOPLE STAYED IN THE FIELDS WHILE OTHERS PUT UP POSTERS AT THE COMMUNES.
