  • Description

THE GREEK OPPOSITION LEADER,MR. GEORGE PAPANDREOU LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) ADDRESSED A DRAMATIC APPEAL TO KING CONSTANTINE TO CALL NEW GENERAL ELECTIONS IN THE COUNTRY.

ADDRESSING A MASSIVE RALLY OF CENTRE UNION PARTY SUPPORTERS IN ATHENS, MR. PAPANDREOU SAID HIS CALL FOR ELECTIONS WAS NOT A REQUEST, BUT A RIGHT.

MR. PAPANDREOU TOLD THE RALLY -- ESTIMATED AT NEARLY 200-THOUSAND -- THAT EVERYTHING IN GREEK LIFE HAD BEEN DISRUPTED. THERE WAS NO PARLIAMENT; NO GOVERNMENT; NO CHURCH; NO ECONOMY AND N PUBLIC LIFE, HE DECLARED.

STRINGENT SECURITY PRECAUTIONS WERE TAKEN FOR THE RALLY AND ALL POLICE LEAVE WAS CANCELLED IN ATHENS AND PIREAUS.

MR. PAPANDREOU APPEALED TO THE PEOPLE AT THE RALLY TO DISPERSE QUIETLY.

THE RALLY WAS HELD TO MARK THE ELECTORAL VICTORY OF THE 1964 GENERAL ELECTIONS WHEN THE CENTRE UNION PARTY RECEIVED 53 PER CENT OF THE POLL.

(MR. PAPANDREOU RESIGNED AS PRIME MINISTER OF GREECE IN JULY OF LAST YEAR AFTER A DISPUTE WITH KING CONSTANTINE. IT WAS NOT UNTIL SEPTEMBER THAT A NEW GOVERNMENT, UNDER MR. STEPHANOS STEPHANOPOULOS, WAS FIRMLY INSTALLED AFTER WINNING A PARLIAMENTARY VOTE OF CONFIDENCE DESPITE OPPOSITION FROM MEMBERS OF THE CENTRE UNION PARTY.)
