  • Description

Professor Ephraim Katchalski is the Labour Party's candidate and favourite in the Israeli presidential elections. They are to be held by a secret ballot in the Knesset on April 10th. He is a teacher at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovoth, Israel, and is known for his contribution to the physics of large molecules and membranes.

There has been considerable discontent in the Labour Party at the way Professor Katchalski's candidacy was steam-rollered through because the original nomination, Mr. Vitzak Navon, was not popular with the party leaders. There has been talk of the party dissidents voting for the nomination of the Opposition Parties, Dr. Ephraim Orbach.

SYNOPSIS: The favourite in the Israeli presidential election on April 10th is Professor Ephraim Katchalski, the majority Labour Party's candidate. He's teacher at the Weizmann Institute at Rehovoth.

There was considerable friction within the Labour party because Professor Katchalski's candidacy seemed to have been promoted purely to baulk the election of rival candidate Mr. Yitzak Navon.

He is known for his contribution to the physics of large molecules and membranes, and has been active in international research in immunology. His brother, also a distinguished scientist, was killed in the recent guerrilla attack at Lod Airport.

Dr. Katchalski has always believed in combining public and academic life, and feels a common belief in science can do much to unify peoples. But his own candidacy has caused much dissension among parties in the Kneseat.
