Background: PRESIDENT-ELECT RENE SCHICK SAID THIS WEEK THAT HE DEEPLY REGRETTED THE BLOODSHED DURING THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN NICARAGUA ON SUNDAY. TWO PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND SEVEN OTHER INJURED IN RIOTING AT MANAGUA.

SCHICK BLAMED OPPOSITION LEADER FERNANDO AGUERO FOR SUNDAY'S PROTEST DEMONSTRATION, WHICH LED TO THE VIOLENCE. AGUERO HAD ORDERED HIS FOLLOWERS TO BOYCOTT THE ELECTIONS. DURING THE CLASH OF DEMONSTRATORS AND POLICE, AGUERO SOUGHT REFUGE IN A HOUSE NEAR MANAGUA'S CENTRAL PARK. AFTER EXTENSIVE NEGOTIATIONS, AGUERO WAS ESCORTED HOME AND PLACED UNDER HOUSE ARREST.

SCHICK WAS THE CANDIDATE OF THE SOMOZA FAMILY, WHO HAVE RULED NICARAGUA FOR YEARS. HE WON BY A WIDE MARGIN OVER CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE DIEGO MANUEL CHAMORRO. SCHICK, WHO TAKES OFFICE IN MAY, SUCCEEDS LUIS SOMOZA, PRESIDENT SINCE 1957. SOMOZA'A BROTHER, GENERAL ANASTASIO SOMOZA, SAID HE WOULD CONTINUE AS NICARAGUA'S CHIEF "NATIONAL GUARDIAN" BECAUSE OF HIS BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE.

THE 54-YEAR-OLD SCHICK SAID HE WOULD MAINTAIN THE SAME ANTI-CASTRO POLICY AS THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT, BUT HE WOULD NOT BE THE PUPPET OF ANY GOVERNMENT OR INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION.
