  • Description

WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE ONE OF THE LONGEST-ESTABLISHED VIET CONG SANCTUARIES IN SOUTH VIETNAM IS REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN PENETRATED BY TROOPS OF THE ARVN 21ST DIVISION, OPERATING IN THE RICKEST MEKONG DELTA AREA.

THE SANCTUARY IS IN THE U MINH FOREST, ABOUT 100 MILES (160 KMS) SOUTH WEST OF SAIGON.

EVER SINCE THE DAYS OF THE FRENCH INSURGENTS HAVE USED THIS SWAMPY, JUNGLE REGION AS A BASE CAMP AREA.

VIET CONG FORCES STILL CONTROL LARGE PARTS OF THE MEKONG DELTA AND AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS HAVE BEEN OPERATING IN THE PADDY FIELDS AND JUNGLE WITHOUT A BREAK FOR MANY MONTHS.

OVER THE PAST 18 MONTHS THE AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES HAVE CLAIMED TO HAVE ELIMINATED AT LEAST FOUR VIET CONG BATTALIONS BY REPEATED PATROLS AND SEARCHES ON THE DELTA. THE INFANTRY SOLDIERS ATTACKED THE SANCTUARY AT DAWN BY A HELICOPTER ASSAULT LANDING, AND IMMEDIATELY MOVED INTO FOREST AREA. DURING THE DAY FOUR WOMEN SAID TO BE COOKS FOR THE VIET CONG WERE CAPTURED.

THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN FROM TWO OR THREE FAMILIES WERE FOUND HIDDEN IN A MUDDY BUNKER, TERRIFIED FROM THE NEARBY BOMBING.
