  • Description

AT LEAST SIX PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND MORE THAN 70 INJURED WHEN A LORRY LOADED WITH CHEMICALS EXPLODED IN A MUNITIONS FACTORY IN THE BELGIAN TOWN OF MALINES TODAY (MONDAY).

ABOUT 300 WORKERS HAD JUST RETURNED FROM THEIR LUNCH BREAK WHEN THE LORRY, LOADED WITH CHEMICALS FOR CLEANING SHELL CASES, BLEW UP INSIDE THE FACTORY. THE GLASS ROOF SHATTERED, AND A CASCADE OF GLASS SHOWERED DOWN ONTO THE FACTORY FLOOR.

A PASSER-BY WAS KILLED WHEN A WALL COLLAPSED.

THE BLAST COULD BE HEARD OVER A WIDE AREA, AND WINDOWS WERE SMASHED AND ROOFS DAMAGED IN ABOUT 100 HOMES NEAR THE PLANT.

FIREMEN SEARCHED THROUGH THE DEBRIS OF THE WRECKED FACTORY, DIGGING OUT FIVE BODIES. AT LEAST TWELVE OF THE INJURED TAKEN TO HOSPITAL WERE LATER DESCRIBED AS SERIOUSLY ILL.
