  • Description

The 1972 Brazilian Grand Prix was won at Sao Paulo on Thursday (30 March) by Argentinean driver, Carlos Reutemann - driving a Brabham BT 34.

The win was a surprise for Reutemann as much as to the large crowd. Local star, Emerson Fittipaldi had been leading for most of the race but had to retire only five laps from the finish with a broken rear suspension.

The race, which did not count towards the 1972 World Drivers' Championship, was the first Formula One event to be held in Brazil. It was part of the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of Brazil's independence.

SYNOPSIS: Last minute pit preparations before the start of the first Formula One Motor Race to be held in Brazil. It's the 1972 Brazilian Grand Prix - run at Sao Paulo on Thursday.

Favourite for the race - Emerson Fittipaldi of Brazil in a Lotus. He was to lead for most of the race - only to retire five laps from the finish with a broken suspension.

The race was over 182-and-a-half miles (294 kilometres) and did not count for the Would Drivers' Championship. However, the appearance of the Formula One cars generated wide interest among Brazilians.

Emerson Fittpaldi was a clear leader for most of the journey. A Brazilian, he was loudly cheered by the hugh crowd.

Electrical trouble forces Car Number 18 driven by Spain's Alex Soler-Roig out of the race. Emerson Fittipaldi's withdrawal later left the race to the Argentinean, Carlos Reutemann. He streaked past the chequered flag in his Bradham BT 34. His average speed was 113 miles an hour (181 kilometres an hour)
While congratulations are offered to the winning driver, the second and third places were declared. They went to Ronnie Peterson of Sweden and Wilson Fittipaldi of Brazil.
