  • Description

China's art handicrafts with their long history have a unique national style.

Since the liberation, and particularly since the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, traditional art handicrafts in Shanghai have made rapid progress. Retaining the quintessence of the past, the craftsmen dare to blaze new trails and have created many new works.

Recently, Shanghai held an art handicrafts exhibition displaying more than 1,000 objects including ivory and jade carvings and wood sculptures. These exhibits feature revolutionary political contents and traditional Chinese craftsmanship. They are liked by the workers, peasants and soldiers.

This group of ivory carvings depict several of the most well-known scenes from the revolutionary modern ballet "Red Detachment of Women". They vividly portray the spirit of the heroic characters in the ballet.

This jade vase depicting a bumper harvest is an ode to the superiority of the people's communes.

This boxwood sculpture entitled "Anti-Imperialist Storm" was done by 17 young craftsmen whose average age is under 30. With bold cuts coupled with delicate strokes, the sculptors ardently extol the revolutionary spirit of the people of various countries -- their dauntless heroism and unity in struggle.
