Background: A British car maker has developed a mobile casualty unit capable of providing a range of emergency services at large-scale disasters.

British Leyland Motor Corporation Limited has developed, what it calls, "The British Leyland Lifeliner" -- a multi-purpose emergency vehicle, built on its Leyland National bus chassis.

The vehicle is fully equipped for instant conversion into a communications centre and a casualty-clearing station. It has its own electric generator, radio telephone and computer link controlled from the driver's compartment.

The main body of the vehicle is fitted with oxygen and anaesthetic gas supplies, electro-cardiographs, saline drips and other built-in life-saving equipment.

This vehicle also has a small hovercraft and a buggy on trial for search-and-rescue duties.
