  • Description

The United States' first space station will be blasted into earth orbit on Monday (14 May) by a Saturn 18 rocket carrying the three astronauts who will live aboard Skylab for almost a month.

Before the countdowns for the two launchings began on Wednesday (9 May) morning, scientists at Cape Kennedy conducted a simulated countdown to check equipment and procedures for the Saturn 5 rocket.

The astronauts who will spend 28 days conducting experiments and observations aboard Skylab are Commander Charles Conrad, Dr. Joseph Kerwin and Paul Weitz. Two more crews will succeed them in their 270 mile (480 kms) high orbit -- in August and November.
