Background: Many European families fleeing from the violence that has swept through the new Congo Republic, have crossed the frontier into Northern Rhodesia. Unable to cope with the numbers arriving in Lusaka, the Rhodesian Government has provided a refugee centre in Salisbury, the Federal capital.
On arrival in Lusaka anxious men and women search the town for relatives and friends in the hope that they have been saved from wave of terror that has flamed throughout the Congo since July 10. A fleet of cars and coaches take the tired families on the next leg of their journey to Salisbury. Along the Great North Road, between the two cities, meals and warm drinks are served 24 hours a day.
To assist new arrivals the police have drawn up a list of all known refugees in the area. These are posted in all the reception centres. In Salisbury all the available beds in hotels and hostels have been made ready for the refugees. The Rhodesian Government has set up a fund to provide the worst cases with clothes and food. The South African Government has offered to accept any homeless Belgians.
