    The Danes' last filing before Lent is 'Hitting the Barrel' - a traditional ritual called Fastelavn, Feb 9. Horsemen charge along the street towards suspended barrels on which cats are painted. The man who knocks off the last piece of barrel is 'King of the Cats'.

    Originally there were live cats in the barrels,j representing Summer. The object of the ritual was to smash Winter, the barrels, and release Summer.
