Background: The coup in Cyprus caused immediate reaction in Turkey. On Monday (July 15) the Government asked Britain for immediate negotiations aimed at reaching agreement on joint action. Unlike Greece, where the coup was not widely reported and the fate of President Makarios not mentioned, newspapers in Turkey gave the story full treatment.

Troops were placed around the Greek Consulate in Istanbul in case of demonstrations, but overall the situation in the city seemed calm.

The Turkish Chief of Staff, General Semih Sancar flew to Ankara for urgent discussions with the Government on the situation.
