  • Description

At a cost of GBP3,000, a 75-tons, 80-year old Banyan tree was moved ten miles and transplanted April 26 to satisfy the wishes of Chicago millionaire John D. MacArthur.

Tree surgeons treated the tree for four months before bulldozers an earthmoving equipment were brought in to lift it from Mrs. Hick's garden and transplant it on the new location. While this large-scale operation was underway, three crack express trains were held up when the tree was carried across the line.

The 60-feet high tree was seen by Mr. MacActhur when passing a private garden at Palm Beach, Florida, in a train. He decided that he wanted the tree to grace the entrance to the new incorporated city of Palm Beach Gardens, which MacArthur built.
