Background: Twice U.S. Open winner, donna Caponi Young shot a history-making eight-under-par 64 in the australian Ladies' Open golf championship in Melbourne on sunday (14 March)
In doing so Mrs. Young smashed the previous women's record in Australia by five strokes and bettered the ten-year-old course record by one stroke.

The Wille-Qantas 15,000 dollar (8,500 pounds sterling) championship was held at Victoria Golf Club.

The eight-under-part 64 almost matched the lowest round anywhere in the history of women's golf, a nine-under-par 62 by American Micky Wright in 1964.

Runner up in the tournament was last year's winner Chako Higuchi of Japan. She was followed by another American Joanne Carner. Jane Lock was best amateur with rounds of 75, 72, 75, compared with Mrs. Young's 72, 64, 70.

Mrs. Young, aged 31, wore a floppy red hat in the tournament which she calls her "floppy pancake hat".

SYNOPSIS: Twice winner of the U.S. Open golf championship, american Mrs. Donna Young tees off in the final round of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Sunday. She shot to victory with a history-making eight-under-par 64. Her strongest opponent was last year's winner Chako Higuchi of Japan who had to be content with second on the Victoria Golf Club course.

Fiercely competing for second place was another American Joanne Carner. She finished third in the Wills-Qantas sponsored championship.

By the 18th hole, the championship battle seemed already to have been won by Mrs. Young with Miss Haguchi trying to confirm her second place. Mrs. Young never looked like losing the 15,000 dollar prize. Her eight-under-par 64 made history as the best ever round for women's golf in Australia.

Mrs. Young's history-breaking round also broke the 10-year-old course record by one stroke. One of the reasons the winner of the 1969 and 1970 U.S. Opens gives for her success is the new larger size American ball she uses. The best amateur round was played by Australian champion Jane Lock. Mrs. Young attracted a lot of attention with her red floppy hat which she says brings her good luck.
