  • Description

The international motor industry regards the Brussels motorshow, held this year from the 19th, to the 31st of January, as something of a market barometer, since it is the first and biggest of the year.

Among the exhibitors at the show the British in particular want to do better in 1971, after a bad year in 1970. French Renaults and German Volkswagens have been gaining a bigger share of the British market, and among the British ideas for 1971 are a new family saloon from British Leyland, a new small Healey sports-car, and a new 12-cylinder Jaguar engine.

The excellence of Japanese products is also a worry to all the international market leaders. The Japanese recently reduced their duty on cars to below the 20 per cent requested by the European Economic Community (E.E.C) at the Kennedy round tariff negotiations, in a bid to encourage E.E.C countries to follow suit. Italy has been particularly onto into the country. At the Brussels show the Japanese have on view their rival for the popular British 'Mini', the 1000 cc Datsun, with front-wheel drive and transverse engine.

A good reception at the show is crucial for a prototype mid-engined 2-seater British Ford, the G.T. 70. This is a high-performance model for the Luxury market, the development of which owes a lot to Ford's experience in international racing and rallying. It is said to be capable of 180 m.p.h. (290 k.p.h)
From Russia comes the first product of their new factory of the Volga, looking very much like a Fiat. This is not surprising, since Fiat of Italy built the factory which made it. Stranger still is the possibility that the Soviet Union might be able to sell their new car to the west at a lower price than the Italians could.
