  • Description

Lebanese parliamentaries have been meeting to lay the groundwork for the selection of a new government, following the resignation of Prime Minister Selim al-Hoss' eight-man Cabinet of techorats.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting have been going on in Beirut's Mansour Palace amid tight security after the Cabinet resigned in the wake of intelligence reports suggesting renewed sectarian violence in the city.

The atmosphere of the meetings was said to be relaxed even though the Ministers has stepped down amid a row over their use of Syrian peacekeeping troops to quell heavy fighting between rival militias in Beirut last week. In those clashes, an estimated 50 people died and another 250 were injured. And the surprise resignation provoked press speculation about deep divisions in the cabinet...speculation which was quickly denied.

The resignation of the cabinet has injected a new sense urgency to all divisions in a country facing a multiplicity of problems. Newsmen in Beirut say later there was an obvious determination at the meetings to establish a national understanding.
